1. Unweighted vs. Weighted GPA

- Standard Courses (4.0 Max): A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0
- Honors Courses (+0.5 Boost): A = 4.5, B = 3.5, C = 2.5, D = 1.5, F = 0.0
- AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment (+1.0 Boost): A = 5.0, B = 4.0, C = 3.0, D = 2.0, F = 0.0
2. What Score Do You Need on the Final Exam?
Before finals week, almost every student does the same napkin math trying to figure out what score will save their grade. You can calculate this directly using the standard formula:
Say you currently have an 84% in class, you want a 90% (an A), and the final exam is worth 25% (0.25) of the course grade:
- Step 1: Find the remaining coursework weight: 1 - 0.25 = 0.75
- Step 2: Multiply your current score by that weight: 84 × 0.75 = 63
- Step 3: Subtract that from your goal: 90 - 63 = 27
- Step 4: Divide by the exam weight: 27 / 0.25 = 108% (You would need extra credit for an A, or just an easy 68% to lock in a solid B).
3. How Test Curves Actually Work
When an entire class gets crushed by an impossible test, professors curve the grades so half the room does not fail. Curves are not random magic; they follow strict math formulas. The most popular curve models include:
- Square Root Curve (10 × √(Raw Score)): A fair curve that gives a huge boost to lower scores while gently nudging high scores. A raw 49% jumps to 70%, a raw 64% turns into 80%, and an 81% becomes a 90%.
- Linear Scaling to 100%: Takes the highest score in the room and scales it to 100%, boosting everyone by that same proportion.
- Flat Point Addition: Adds a set number of bonus points (like +6%) across the board, capped at 100%.
- Z-Score Curve: Shifts scores based on the class average and standard deviation to normalize the spread.
4. Converting 10-Point CGPA and Foreign Grades to US 4.0 GPA
If you studied in India, the UK, Europe, or Canada, converting your marks for US grad school applications or visa paperwork can be confusing. - India (10-Point CGPA): UGC and AICTE scale where 8.5 to 10.0 CGPA converts to a 4.0 US GPA (A/O grade), 7.5 to 8.4 converts to 3.5 GPA, and 6.5 to 7.4 converts to 3.0 GPA.
- United Kingdom (Honours): First-Class Honours (70%+) converts to 4.0 GPA, Upper Second (2:1, 60% to 69%) converts to 3.3 to 3.7 GPA, and Lower Second (2:2, 50% to 59%) converts to 2.7 to 3.0 GPA.
- Germany (Bavarian Scale): Uses the Modified Bavarian Formula where 1.0 to 1.5 (Sehr Gut) translates to a 3.8 to 4.0 US GPA.
- Canada (OMSAS Scale): An A or A+ (85% to 100%) maps to a 4.0 GPA across provincial credit systems.
- Australia (7.0 AQF Scale): High Distinction (HD, 85%+) maps to a 4.0 GPA, and Distinction (D, 75% to 84%) maps to a 3.5 GPA.
